Terahertz Imaging System is an imaging and detection system that uses terahertz radiation, usually around 0.1–10 THz, between microwave and infrared waves, to inspect objects or materials. The terahertz band sits between radio waves and light waves in the electromagnetic spectrum, and NICT describes it as roughly 100 GHz to 10 THz.
Unlike a normal camera, a terahertz imaging system can detect information below the surface of many non-metallic and dielectric materials, such as plastics, paper, ceramics, coatings, textiles, composites, tablets, packaging, and some biological materials. Unlike X-ray, THz radiation is generally treated as non-ionizing, so it is attractive for non-destructive and non-contact inspection. THz imaging is widely discussed for non-contact inspection of materials that are opaque in visible light.
The global Terahertz Imaging System market is moving from research-oriented instruments toward application-specific inspection platforms, with the strongest near-term demand coming from industrial non-destructive testing, pharmaceutical quality control, security screening, and material analysis. The technology trend is toward faster, more compact, more integrated, and software-led systems. Suppliers are also moving toward line-scan systems, detector-array cameras, compact THz-TDS modules, reflection heads, OEM modules, and AI-assisted image interpretation, because end users want simple outputs such as pass/fail decisions, coating thickness, defect position, material class, or density maps rather than raw waveform data.
Pharmaceutical and biomedical uses are becoming higher-value niche markets. THz-TDS is used for non-destructive characterization of tablet porosity and microstructure, while terahertz pulsed imaging has been applied to pharmaceutical film-coating analysis. Biomedical imaging remains more exploratory because water absorption limits penetration depth, but THz remains attractive for surface-level and hydration-sensitive analysis.
