Demand is being driven primarily by the construction of large alkaline-electrolysis projects and the expansion of modular hydrogen-production systems. As individual electrolyzer capacity increases and multiple stacks are integrated into larger production trains, stainless tube demand is expanding beyond small instrumentation lines into module interconnections, electrolyte circulation, hydrogen and oxygen separation, purification and centralized cooling systems.
Grade 316L is expected to remain the principal material for hydrogen, oxygen, purified-water and PEM-system piping. Grade 304L is more widely used in lower-pressure auxiliary circuits, while duplex and lean-duplex grades have potential in alkaline-electrolyte circulation and large heat-exchange systems. High-purity PEM applications place greater emphasis on internal surface roughness, particle control, bright annealing and electropolishing, resulting in significantly higher prices and margins for small-diameter BA and EP tubing than for conventional pickled process pipe.
The principal market risks are project delays, limited visibility into OEM procurement, price pressure from standardization and substitution by engineering polymers in selected low-pressure water circuits.
