The heat shield must also withstand substantial aerodynamic forces and impact loads during re-entry.
The product typically consists of a load-bearing substrate, a thermal protection layer, an adhesive or cushioning layer, and attachment structures. Its design is customized according to spacecraft dimensions, re-entry velocity, heat-flux conditions, and reusability requirements. Representative products include the Avcoat heat shield used on the Orion crew vehicle, the PICA-X heat shield used on the Dragon spacecraft, and the heat shields fitted to the Hayabusa sample-return capsules.
