A programmable AC constant current source is a specialized test power supply designed primarily to provide stable AC current output. It continuously monitors the output current and automatically adjusts the output voltage in response to changes in load impedance, thereby maintaining the actual current close to the preset value. Constant-current regulation can no longer be maintained when the required voltage exceeds the compliance voltage or rated output voltage of the equipment. Commercial products typically allow users to program current amplitude, frequency, phase, waveform, ramp-up and ramp-down time, duration, and cycle count. Multi-step test sequences can be executed through RS-232, RS-485, LAN, GPIB, or PC-based control software. Unlike a programmable AC power source, which primarily regulates voltage, this equipment regulates AC current. It also differs from primary current injection equipment that provides only short-duration high-current output without continuous closed-loop current regulation.
Upstream components mainly include power semiconductor devices, line-frequency or high-frequency transformers, current-sensing modules, control boards, filtering components, cooling systems, and enclosures. High-current models place greater demands on transformers, reactors, copper busbars, liquid-cooling structures, and current sensors, whereas precision models rely more heavily on low-noise circuitry, digital control, and calibration capabilities. Downstream customers primarily include manufacturers of electricity meters, circuit breakers, instrument transformers, power transformers, electromagnetic components, and cables, as well as third-party testing organizations and metrology laboratories.
