Powered shield support is a hydraulically powered roof-support system used in underground longwall mining faces. A typical unit consists of a canopy, shield beam, base, hydraulic legs, linkage mechanism, advancing mechanism, and hydraulic control system. Hydraulic legs generate support force between the mine roof and floor, while the shield beam and linkage structure form a protected working space. During mining operations, the system supports the roof, isolates the working area from caved rock in the goaf, maintains a safe operating space, and advances in coordination with the mining face. Compared with chock supports, chock-shield supports, and caving supports, powered shield supports are typically characterized by a shield-type structure and a two-leg configuration, offering a compact design, strong adaptability to roof movement, and relatively fast advancing performance.
The upstream supply chain mainly includes high-strength structural steel, hydraulic legs and cylinders, hydraulic valve assemblies, seals, high-pressure hoses, sensors, electro-hydraulic controllers, and fabricated structural components. The reliability of the hydraulic system, welding quality of the steel structure, material strength, and control-system performance directly affect support resistance, service life, and operational stability. Downstream demand is concentrated in underground coal longwall mining, with additional applications in certain underground mines, such as potash mines, that employ similar longwall support systems. Powered shield supports are typically integrated with shearers, armored face conveyors, and face control systems to form complete longwall mining systems.
