Pitch-based graphitized carbon fiber refers to a type of high-performance carbon fiber produced using petroleum pitch or coal tar pitch as raw materials, followed by a series of processing steps: melt spinning, pre-oxidation, carbonization, and high-temperature graphitization (typically conducted between 2000°C and 3000°C). Its defining characteristics lie in its raw material—pitch, rather than polyacrylonitrile (PAN)—and its exceptionally high degree of graphitization achieved after treatment, resulting in a carbon content typically exceeding 99%.
The primary raw materials for pitch-based graphitized carbon fiber are byproducts of petroleum refining or coal chemical industries—specifically, petroleum pitch and coal tar pitch. Petroleum pitch is derived from residual oils generated during processes such as crude oil catalytic cracking and ethylene cracking; while resources are relatively abundant, the quality of this raw material tends to fluctuate significantly. Coal pitch is obtained through the high-temperature distillation of coal tar; given the advanced state of the domestic coal chemical industry, raw material costs are relatively low, yet the high content of impurities (such as quinoline-insolubles and ash) necessitates complex refining and purification processes. High-end products, conversely, utilize synthetic mesophase pitch, which is prepared via catalytic polymerization using pure aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g., naphthalene or methylnaphthalene) as feedstock. This approach offers controllable raw material purity and a highly ordered molecular structure, though the associated costs are significantly higher than those of the natural pitch route. Overall, raw material costs account for approximately 30% to 40% of the total production cost. The graphitization stage—involving high-temperature treatment between 2000°C and 3000°C—consumes vast amounts of energy; consequently, electricity costs can account for as much as 40% to 50% of the total cost structure, making this the most critical cost component. Upstream processes—including spinning, pre-oxidation, and carbonization—along with equipment depreciation and labor costs, collectively account for the remaining 15% to 20%. Due to the extremely high temperature requirements for graphitization and the substantial capital investment required for equipment, the production cost of pitch-based graphitized carbon fiber is significantly higher than that of PAN-based carbon fiber. This is particularly true for ultra-high modulus products, where costs can reach 3 to 5 times those of PAN-based T700-grade carbon fiber; this high cost remains the primary bottleneck constraining its widespread commercial application.
