Phosphorus pentafluoride is an inorganic phosphorus fluoride composed of one phosphorus atom and five fluorine atoms, with a molecular weight of 125.97. At ambient conditions, it is a colorless, pungent, toxic and nonflammable compressed gas with strong Lewis acidity and fluorinating activity. PF₅ is extremely sensitive to moisture and rapidly hydrolyzes to form highly corrosive hydrogen fluoride and phosphorus oxyfluoride species. Its principal industrial use is the production of lithium hexafluorophosphate through reaction with lithium fluoride. It is also used to manufacture sodium hexafluorophosphate, other inorganic and organic hexafluorophosphate salts, and, in much smaller quantities, in semiconductor processing, specialty fluorination and polymerization catalysis. Owing to its hazardous properties, industrial PF₅ is normally produced, purified and consumed directly in closed, fluorine-resistant continuous systems. In 2025, global phosphorus pentafluoride sales (including captive consumption) reached approximately 190,000 tons, with an estimated average price of US$4,500 per ton.
Growth in the phosphorus pentafluoride market is primarily driven by electric vehicles, battery energy storage, portable electronics and other lithium-ion battery applications. Lithium hexafluorophosphate remains the most widely commercialized electrolyte salt in conventional liquid lithium-ion battery systems, meaning that battery production growth directly increases industrial PF₅ consumption. Rapid expansion of battery energy storage is creating an additional source of demand, while producers are integrating phosphorus chlorides, anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, PF₅, LiPF₆ and electrolyte production to reduce procurement, logistics and handling costs. The toxicity, moisture sensitivity and transportation risks of PF₅ further encourage adjacent plant layouts, direct-pipeline transfer and continuous processing. Sodium hexafluorophosphate for sodium-ion batteries and high-purity PF₅ for semiconductor applications may provide supplementary growth, although LiPF₆ overcapacity, cyclical pricing, substitution by salts such as LiFSI, and stringent environmental and process-safety requirements will constrain profitability and the expansion of the standalone merchant-gas market.
