    Paper friction materials are porous composite friction materials made from cellulose fibers, aramid fibers, mineral fibers, phenolic resin, rubber, graphite, friction modifiers and fillers through papermaking, impregnation, curing, bonding, hot pressing and precision finishing. They are usually bonded to steel cores or clutch plates and operate in ATF, hydraulic oil or lubricating oil. Their key function is to provide stable torque transfer, clutch engagement, energy absorption and wear control in wet clutches, automatic transmissions, CVT, DCT, DHT, torque-converter lock-up clutches, construction machinery wet brakes, agricultural drivetrains, forklifts and industrial wet transmission systems.

    Paper friction materials are friction-functional materials made from fiber-based paper substrates impregnated and cured with resin, fillers, friction modifiers, reinforcing fibers, and functional additives. They are mainly used in wet friction plates, wet clutch discs, torque-converter lock-up clutch plates, automatic-transmission brake plates, all-wheel-drive coupling plates, limited-slip differential plates, and selected industrial wet clutch or brake systems. The material is usually not a standalone finished component; instead, it serves as the friction layer bonded to a steel core plate or carrier and is further processed into friction plates, clutch discs, or brake plates.
    In terms of performance, paper-based friction materials offer high porosity, good oil absorption, compressibility, permeability, tunable friction behavior, smooth engagement, and strong high-volume manufacturing consistency. They are especially suitable for operation in lubricating oil or automatic transmission fluid. Their performance depends not only on the fiber substrate, resin system, fillers, and friction modifiers, but also on steel-plate surface roughness, fluid chemistry, groove structure, engagement pressure, friction energy, operating temperature, and electronic control strategy.
    By application, paper-based friction materials are mainly used in automotive AT clutch and brake packs, wet DCT clutch packs, dedicated hybrid transmissions, torque-converter lock-up clutches, CVT launch clutches, transfer cases, all-wheel-drive torque-management systems, and limited-slip differentials. Compared with carbon-based friction materials, paper-based materials usually offer stronger advantages in cost efficiency, friction-tuning flexibility, and high-volume manufacturing. Compared with non-woven materials, they benefit from more mature formulations, broader supply-chain support, and deeper application experience.
    From an industry perspective, demand for paper-based friction materials is mainly driven by automatic transmissions, wet dual-clutch transmissions, hybrid drivetrains, intelligent all-wheel-drive systems, and high-efficiency transmission systems.
