    • 14.2 Research Process and Data Source

According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage (OCCS) market size was valued at US$ 192 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 871 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 26.9% during review period.
Onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) is a technological solution that involves capturing, liquefying, and temporarily storing carbon dioxide (CO2) directly on board the ship during navigation, using exhaust gases from its engines or boilers, and then unloading it to shore-based facilities for permanent geological storage after the ship docks. This technology is considered one of the core technological pathways for the international shipping industry to cope with increasingly stringent greenhouse gas emission reduction regulations and achieve the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) net-zero emission strategic goal around 2050.
At the technical implementation level, OCCS systems generally adopt post-combustion chemical absorption as the mainstream process. The basic process is as follows: exhaust gases from the ship's main and auxiliary engines first undergo pretreatment processes such as desulfurization, denitrification, and dust removal and cooling to remove sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. The purified exhaust gases then enter an absorption tower where they come into full contact with an amine-based chemical solvent. The solvent selectively absorbs CO2, while the unabsorbed purified gas is directly released into the atmosphere. The rich liquid that has absorbed CO2 is regenerated by heating to release a high-concentration CO2 gas stream, and the regenerated lean liquid is cooled and recycled. The extracted high-purity carbon dioxide is liquefied through processes such as compression, dehydration, and condensation, and temporarily stored in dedicated cryogenic liquid carbon dioxide tanks on board. When the ship docks at a port with receiving capabilities, this liquid carbon dioxide is unloaded to a shore-based terminal via ship-to-shore connection facilities, and is ultimately transported to depleted oil and gas fields or deep brackish water layers for permanent storage, thus achieving a closed-loop chain of capture and storage.
Energy consumption and ship system integration will be key techno-economic factors determining the speed of market penetration. After CO2 capture, solvent regeneration, compression, drying, liquefaction, and storage are required, all of which consume steam, electricity, and cooling capacity. If additional energy is still primarily provided by ship fuel oil, the actual net emission reduction will be significantly lower than the system's nominal capture rate. A study by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) on large oil tankers shows that, without system optimization, onboard capture can result in approximately 9% to 24% additional energy consumption; while some retrofitting schemes can capture significant amounts of CO2, the net emission reduction level will decrease significantly after considering the additional fuel consumption. Therefore, future equipment development will increasingly emphasize the utilization of main engine waste heat, regenerative heat recovery, efficient compression liquefaction, and integrated design with the ship's steam, electricity, and cooling systems.
From a ship type and commercial application perspective, large bulk carriers, oil tankers, container ships, LNG carriers, and other large ocean-going merchant ships are expected to be the first markets to achieve large-scale application. These ships have high annual fuel consumption and high CO2 emissions per ship. Therefore, installing carbon capture and storage systems can result in more significant absolute emission reductions and potential carbon cost savings. Furthermore, their larger deck and engine room spaces are more suitable for accommodating capture, regeneration, liquefaction, and storage equipment. Fixed shipping routes are also crucial. Therefore, the future development of onboard carbon capture and storage will not be evenly distributed across all ships globally, but will instead focus first on fleets with larger emissions, suitable age and remaining lifespan, stable routes, and the ability to connect to CO2 receiving facilities.
