Non Crimp Fabric (NCF) is a class of engineered reinforcement textiles used in composite materials, where continuous fiber tows are laid in one or multiple predefined orientations without crimping or interlacing, and are mechanically stabilized primarily by stitching or light binding systems. Unlike woven fabrics, the fibers in NCF remain straight, enabling higher fiber efficiency in load-bearing directions, improved fatigue resistance, and more predictable mechanical performance in composite laminates. NCF structures can be designed as unidirectional, biaxial, triaxial, or multiaxial systems depending on the required load path architecture.
From a supply chain perspective, upstream raw materials mainly include continuous fiber tows such as carbon fiber, glass fiber, aramid fiber, basalt fiber, and hybrid thermoplastic fibers. Supporting materials include stitching yarns (polyester, polyamide, glass), thermoplastic binders, powder binders (epoxy-compatible systems), sizing agents, and surface treatment chemicals that improve resin compatibility and drapability.
In 2025, global sales of Non Crimp Fabric reached approximately 668 K tons, with an average global market price of around US$ 4,876
/ton. Production capacity varies significantly among manufacturers, with gross profit margins ranging from approximately 10% to 40%.
Non Crimp Fabric is an important structural reinforcement substrate in the composite materials value chain. Demand mainly comes from wind energy, marine, automotive, aerospace, rail transit, industrial components and infrastructure reinforcement. Compared with woven fabrics, NCF offers lower fiber crimp, more flexible fiber-orientation design and higher lay-up efficiency, making it suitable for large, thick and multi-directional load-bearing composite structures. Overall, glass fiber NCF accounts for the majority of volume and is mainly used in wind turbine blades, marine structures and general industrial composites. Carbon fiber NCF represents a smaller share of volume, but it carries higher pricing, stricter qualification requirements and greater customization, giving it a more important role in revenue and margin contribution.
The main growth drivers are lightweighting, larger wind turbine blades, automated composite manufacturing and structural cost reduction. In wind energy, NCF supports efficient reinforcement of spar caps, shear webs and shell structures for larger blades. In automotive and rail applications, it enables weight reduction, crash performance improvement and scalable molding processes. In aerospace and defense, customers place greater emphasis on fiber straightness, mechanical consistency and structural design flexibility. As RTM, vacuum infusion, wet pressing and automated lay-up processes become more widely adopted, NCF will continue to gain value by improving manufacturing efficiency, reducing manual lay-up and optimizing composite performance.
The market, however, is increasingly differentiated. Standard glass fiber NCF is strongly affected by glass fiber pricing, wind project timing and downstream bargaining power, so profitability is generally moderate. Carbon fiber NCF is more exposed to carbon fiber tow supply, aerospace qualification cycles and high-end customer program timing. Looking ahead, companies with multiaxial fabric design capability, stable wide-width production, resin-system compatibility and close downstream process collaboration will be better positioned. Low-end standardized products will face price competition, while high-performance, lightweight, customizable and automation-compatible NCF products are more likely to command premium pricing.
