    Niobium Carbonitride is a refractory ceramic compound composed of niobium, carbon, and nitrogen, typically existing as a solid solution between niobium carbide (NbC) and niobium nitride (NbN), known for its extremely high hardness, melting point (>3,000 °C), wear resistance, and thermal stability. It is widely used as a strengthening and grain-refining additive in high-performance steels (especially HSLA steels), cutting tools, cermets, and coatings for aerospace and automotive applications. The supply chain begins upstream with niobium ore extraction (primarily pyrochlore deposits in Brazil and Canada), followed by beneficiation and conversion into niobium oxides (Nb₂O₅) and ferro-niobium alloys. In the midstream, these intermediates are processed through carbothermal and/or nitridation reactions under high-temperature controlled atmospheres to produce niobium carbonitride powders or sintered materials. Downstream, Nb(C,N) is integrated into steelmaking (microalloying), powder metallurgy, hard coatings (e.g., PVD/CVD), and advanced ceramics manufacturing, supplying industries such as construction, energy, transportation, and precision machining. In 2025, global Niobium Carbonitride output was about 12,000 tons with 16,000 tons of capacity, average prices of USD 18,000–50,000 per ton, and gross margins around 38%.
