Neutral hardening is a heat treatment process used to improve the hardness and wear resistance of metal workpieces. In this process, a metal workpiece is heated above a critical temperature and then rapidly cooled, usually by immersion in brine or oil. This rapid cooling process helps change the crystal structure of the metal, thereby increasing its hardness.The term "Neutral" means that no gases or media are used in the process, which means that no atmosphere control agents, such as nitrogen or hydrogen, are added to affect the chemical composition of the metal surface. In contrast, other types of heat treatments, such as gas quenching or carburizing treatments, may introduce other elements during processing to change the chemical composition of the metal.
Demand is mainly driven by automotive components, aerospace parts, industrial machinery, tools, fasteners, bearings, shafts, springs, structural steel parts, agricultural machinery and construction equipment. The process is used where the component requires high strength, toughness, wear resistance and load-bearing capability throughout the part, such as bolts, brackets, chains, axles, blades and high-stress mechanical parts.
Asia-Pacific is the largest production and demand region because of strong automotive, machinery, tooling, metalworking and industrial manufacturing bases in China, Japan, South Korea, India and Southeast Asia. North America is mature, supported by automotive, aerospace, defense, energy and industrial equipment.
