    Main-Salt-Grade LiFSI refers to lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide, with the molecular formula LiN(SO₂F)₂ and CAS number 171611-11-3, whose purity, moisture, free-acid content, halide content, metallic impurities, residual solvents, and batch consistency satisfy the requirements for use as a principal lithium-ion conducting salt. It is generally supplied as a high-purity white crystalline powder or as a concentrated solution in an anhydrous organic solvent. Liquid shipments should be converted into an anhydrous LiFSI solid-equivalent volume for market measurement.
    The Main-Salt-Grade designation means that the product can replace or partially replace lithium hexafluorophosphate at a relatively high concentration rather than being restricted to low-dosage additive use. In addition to nominal purity of at least 99.9%, the product generally requires moisture below 50 ppm, with premium grades controlled below 20 ppm, together with stringent limits on free acid, chloride, fluoride, sulfate, and metallic impurities. It is applicable to power batteries, energy-storage batteries, high-nickel and high-voltage systems, silicon-based anodes, lithium-metal batteries, and high-concentration or localized high-concentration electrolytes.
    In 2025, global shipments of High-Purity Crystalline Main-Salt LiFSI are estimated at 5,500 tons, with an FOB price of approximately US$20,500 per ton and a gross profit margin of approximately 25% to 35%.
    Main-Salt-Grade LiFSI is evolving from a functional material used in premium electrolyte formulations into a strategic conducting salt for next-generation batteries. Electric vehicles are moving toward 800-volt and higher-voltage architectures, ultra-fast charging, wider operating-temperature ranges, and longer cycle life, while energy-storage batteries increasingly require greater safety, extended warranties, and improved low-temperature performance. These trends expose the limitations of conventional lithium hexafluorophosphate in thermal stability, hydrolytic stability, and low-temperature conductivity. LiFSI provides high ionic conductivity, favorable thermal stability, and effective interfacial-film formation, enabling its role to expand from low-percentage additive use toward mixed main salts, highly concentrated electrolytes, and selected full-LiFSI formulations.
    The primary market barrier is no longer the basic ability to synthesize LiFSI, but the capability to maintain ultra-low impurity levels and consistent quality under mass-production conditions. Small variations in moisture, free acid, chloride, fluoride, and metallic impurities may affect electrolyte stability, electrode interfaces, and current-collector corrosion. The corrosion behavior of LiFSI also varies by cathode chemistry, solvent system, concentration, and operating voltage. Producers therefore need to work directly with electrolyte and battery manufacturers to develop passivation additives, mixed-salt formulations, and concentrated electrolyte systems. Lengthy customer-validation cycles, fluctuating production yields, and concentrated capacity additions will continue to place pressure on less efficient suppliers.
    Power batteries will remain the largest application, with high-nickel cathodes, silicon-rich anodes, fast-charging lithium iron phosphate cells, and high-voltage systems leading adoption. Large-format energy-storage batteries will form the second growth engine, as long cycle life and extended warranty requirements increase the value of high-purity electrolyte salts. Continuous reaction processes, solvent circulation, mother-liquor recovery, and precision crystallization are expected to narrow the cost gap between LiFSI and lithium hexafluorophosphate. Competition will therefore shift from announced capacity toward qualified-product yield, customer approvals, intellectual-property coverage, impurity-control databases, and reliable large-scale supply.
