While its abundance is extremely low, it possesses high strategic value due to its potential key applications in fusion energy, neutron detection, cryogenic refrigeration, and quantum technology. Therefore, it is considered one of the most commercially promising directions for future lunar resource development.
    The prospects for lunar helium-3 mining are generally in a stage of "high potential but long-term realization," driven primarily by the development of controlled nuclear fusion technology and deep-space resource utilization strategies. Theoretically, helium-3 can be used in neutron-free or low-radioactive nuclear fusion reactions and is considered one of the ultimate clean energy fuels. Therefore, once fusion technology is commercialized, it could trigger an exponential demand for helium-3. Meanwhile, with the US Artemis program, China's lunar exploration program, and the advancement of lunar infrastructure construction by private aerospace companies, lunar resource development is moving from the conceptual stage to the engineering verification stage. However, given current technology, the helium-3 content in lunar soil is extremely low (ppb level), making mining, extraction, and return to Earth extremely costly.
