Long Duration Thermal Energy Storage (LDTES) is a technology that stores energy in the form of heat or cold for extended periods—typically from several hours to days or even weeks—and then converts it back into electricity or useful heat when needed. This is achieved by heating or cooling a storage medium such as molten salts, rocks, sand, or phase change materials (PCMs) using excess renewable electricity or industrial waste heat. When demand rises or generation drops, the stored thermal energy is released directly as heat or converted back to electricity using turbines or heat engines. LDTES systems are particularly valuable for industrial decarbonization, district heating, and integrating renewables, offering low cost, long life, and the ability to bridge multi-day or seasonal energy gaps in a sustainable way.
