    Lithium supercapacitors are asymmetric hybrid electrochemical energy storage devices. The positive electrode typically uses activated carbon or other porous carbon materials, storing charge through electrical double-layer adsorption. The negative electrode typically uses pre-lithiated graphite, hard carbon, or other lithium-intercalated carbon materials, storing energy through the insertion and extraction of lithium ions. Pre-lithiation reduces the negative electrode potential, allowing LICs to achieve higher single-cell operating voltage and energy density than traditional double-layer supercapacitors. Commercial LIC cells typically have rated voltages of approximately 3.5 to 4.0 V and capacities exceeding 4,000 F, combining fast charging and discharging, high power density, long cycle life, low self-discharge, and high safety. Compared to traditional EDLCs, LICs offer higher operating voltage and energy density; compared to lithium-ion batteries, they have shorter continuous energy storage time but superior peak power, cycle life, and fast charging performance. They are primarily used in smart meters, IoT terminals, industrial power failure protection, voltage drop compensation, rail transit energy recovery, automated logistics equipment, and short-term high-power energy storage. In 2025, the global production of Lithium Supercapacitors is estimated at 5.25 million units, with an average price of about US$6 per unit and a gross profit margin of about 27%.
    The Lithium Supercapacitor market is evolving from conventional smart-meter and small backup-power applications toward high-reliability, short-duration energy storage and high-frequency power-regulation platforms. Cyclical peak loads generated by AI server training and inference are creating demand for rack-level storage devices that provide millisecond response, withstand frequent cycling, and offer predictable service life. Demand is also rising for voltage-sag mitigation in semiconductor manufacturing, power-sensitive industrial processes, and critical electrical infrastructure. Regenerative braking in rail transportation, rapid charging for AGVs and AMRs, port equipment, smart meters, remote trackers, and long-standby IoT devices are further expanding the addressable market. Partnerships between leading cell producers and power-system suppliers, together with new investment in large-format prismatic cell capacity, indicate that the industry is progressing from technical validation toward scaled commercial deployment.
    Market expansion nevertheless remains constrained by significant technical and commercial barriers. Although LIC energy density is materially higher than that of conventional electric double-layer capacitors, it remains below that of mainstream lithium-ion batteries and is therefore unsuitable for hour-scale energy storage. Pre-lithiation, moisture control, electrolyte matching, and interphase stability directly affect consistency, cycle life, and production yield. LIC systems must also maintain a minimum operating voltage and generally require cell balancing and condition monitoring when connected in series, increasing system complexity. In addition, lithium iron phosphate batteries, conventional supercapacitors, and high-rate lithium-ion batteries compete across different power and discharge-duration ranges. Other risks include inconsistent product terminology, fragmented market definitions, long customer qualification cycles, and concentrated supply of specialized materials.
    The future product mix is expected to become increasingly polarized. Small 3.5 V to 4.2 V products rated at 10 F to 200 F will continue to serve smart meters, IoT terminals, tracking devices, energy harvesting, and embedded hold-up power, where miniaturization, low leakage current, and cost are the principal competitive factors. Large 500 F to 3,000 F cylindrical and prismatic cells will increasingly target AI server racks, industrial voltage-sag compensation, rail transportation, and heavy mobile equipment, where low resistance, thermal management, system safety, and lifetime guarantees are critical. Customers are also moving from purchasing discrete cells toward qualified modules, rack-level storage products, and complete power systems.
