Acrylic is the commonly used name for a plastic compound called Polymethyl Methacrylate, or PMMA. In the high-volume melt route, dried PMMA resin is plasticized in an extruder and pushed through a flat (slot) die, then the melt is laid directly onto a water-cooled chill roll (often called the flat-film/chill-roll or cast-film process) to “freeze” the surface and control clarity and gauge, followed by a roll stack/calender section for thickness/surface control, cooling, edge trimming, slitting, and winding into rolls; tight die-to-roll distance and controlled cooling are emphasized for thickness tolerance and film quality. For premium optical PMMA, manufacturers may instead use monomer casting, where liquid MMA/PMMA syrup is introduced into a mold (classically between plates) and polymerized; industry descriptions commonly distinguish cell casting and continuous (belt) casting for cast PMMA products.
