Heptaldehyde, also known as n-heptanal, is a colorless or slightly yellowish oily liquid with a strong fruity and fatty aroma. As a saturated straight-chain fatty aldehyde, it is mainly used in the synthesis of fragrances (such as jasmine aldehyde) and pharmaceuticals. It is present in various essential oils and is also obtained from the cracking of castor oil.
The upstream segment primarily relies on bio-based raw materials and petrochemicals. The core raw material is castor oil, which is processed through high-temperature cracking to produce heptanal and undecylenic acid. This is currently the main industrial production route, therefore, the cultivation and processing of castor seeds directly determine the cost of raw materials. In addition, the petrochemical route, through the carbonylation of 1-hexene, serves as a supplementary source.
