Compared to traditional chemical precipitation methods (such as lime neutralization or sulfide precipitation), heavy metal scavengers offer significant advantages: mild reaction conditions (ambient temperature, wide pH range), high removal efficiency, resistance to interference from complexing agents, low and stable sludge generation, and the absence of secondary pollution. They can be dosed directly into existing chemical precipitation systems without the need for additional equipment.
    The raw material systems for heavy metal scavengers vary significantly depending on the product type. DTC (dithiocarbamate) types are the most prevalent; their core raw materials include organic amines (such as diethylamine, dimethylamine, and ethylenediamine) and carbon disulfide (CS₂). DTC monomers are prepared through a condensation reaction between the amines and carbon disulfide, followed by a salt-forming reaction to yield the final product. Xanthate types are produced using alcohols (such as ethanol or isopropanol) and carbon disulfide under alkaline conditions. TMT types utilize trimercapto-s-triazine and sodium hydroxide as raw materials. High-molecular-weight polymer types are prepared via free-radical polymerization using raw materials such as acrylamide, acrylic acid, and sulfur-containing monomers. Bio-based types utilize natural polymers—such as chitosan, starch, or cellulose—which undergo chemical modification to introduce chelating groups (such as xanthate or dithiocarbamate groups). Sulfur-free, eco-friendly variants are formulated using sulfur-free chelating groups (such as carboxyl, amino, or oxime groups). Additionally, all product types require the inclusion of alkaline additives (e.g., sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate) for pH adjustment, as well as auxiliary components like stabilizers and dispersants. Carbon disulfide and organic amines are key cost drivers for DTC-based products; fluctuations in their prices directly impact production costs.
    In terms of cost structure, raw materials represent the largest expenditure for heavy metal chelating agents, typically accounting for 50%–65% of total production costs. Organic amines and carbon disulfide are the core raw materials for DTC products, making up 60%–70% of raw material costs; alcohols and carbon disulfide constitute the bulk of costs for xanthate products; and natural polymer raw materials and modifying agents are the primary cost components for bio-based products. Energy and utility costs account for approximately 10%–15%, covering energy consumption for processes such as reaction heating, cooling, agitation, and drying. Equipment depreciation and maintenance costs represent about 10%–15%, with major investments including reaction vessels, condensers, centrifuges, and drying equipment. Environmental protection and safety costs account for roughly 5%–10%; due to the toxicity and volatility of carbon disulfide, tail-gas recovery units and ventilation systems are required, and the use of organic solvents must comply with environmental regulations. Labor and management costs account for approximately 5%–10%, covering areas such as formulation R&D, quality control, and production operations. Packaging and logistics costs make up about 5%–8%; liquid products require corrosion-resistant containers, while solid products require moisture-proof packaging.
