The supply chain begins upstream with PAN or rayon fiber producers and petroleum/coal-based carbon feedstocks, followed by midstream carbonization and graphitization processors that convert precursor fibers into graphite felt rolls or sheets; downstream stages include cutting, surface treatment, quality grading, and integration into battery stacks or electrochemical systems by flow-battery OEMs and energy storage system integrators. The industry is capital-intensive due to high-temperature furnaces, and performance differentiation typically depends on fiber purity, graphitization level, pore structure control, and surface activation technology.
