Graphic Composite Substrate, commonly referred to as MMS, is a high-performance functional substrate used for GaN-based LED epitaxy. It is typically manufactured by adding functional material layers such as SiO₂, AlN, SiC or other engineered films onto a sapphire wafer, followed by lithography, ICP etching, nanoimprint, PECVD/CVD deposition and micro-/nano-pattern transfer processes to form periodic patterned structures. The key purpose of MMS is to improve the GaN epitaxial growth interface, reduce defect density, enhance stress management, increase light extraction efficiency and support higher brightness, better uniformity and improved reliability in LED devices. This research focuses on commercially relevant MMS products for LED and GaN-on-sapphire applications, mainly covering 4-inch and 6-inch substrates, with demand exposure to Mini/Micro LED, automotive LED, high-end backlighting, RGB direct-view displays, high-efficiency lighting and selected emerging GaN power-related use cases.
Based on our research, MMS should be treated as a narrow, high-end derivative of patterned sapphire substrate technology rather than a broad sapphire wafer category. Conventional PSS improves GaN epitaxy and light extraction mainly through patterned surface structures, while MMS adds functional material layers such as SiO₂, AlN or SiC before or during pattern formation. This gives MMS a dual function: structural light-management and engineered interface control. Therefore, a market model that combines MMS with flat sapphire wafers or the entire PSS market would materially overstate the addressable revenue base.
