Only a limited number of companies produce high-purity optical-grade germanium crystals and large-diameter blanks, while grinding, polishing and coating capacity is distributed across China, the United States, the United Kingdom, continental Europe and Japan. US and European manufacturers have established strong positions in defense, aerospace, large-format precision optics and demanding environmental coatings, while Chinese suppliers have become important sources of standard and medium-diameter products through their access to germanium materials, precision optical manufacturing and flexible customization. Customer qualification typically covers dimensional accuracy, flatness, parallelism, surface quality, transmission and environmental durability, favoring suppliers with complete material traceability, metrology and coating capabilities.

Double-sided anti-reflection coatings remain common, while windows exposed to outdoor, vehicle, naval and airborne environments frequently use an external DLC layer combined with an internal AR coating to balance durability and infrared transmission. Selected products also incorporate hydrophobic, conductive or electromagnetic-shielding functions. Larger windows require better crystal uniformity, lower internal defect levels, tighter flatness control and more uniform coatings, resulting in lower production yields than small standard components.
