    Ferric chloride also called as iron chloride is a commodity chemical which is rarely observed in its natural form. As an etching agent, Ferric chloride has been widely used in the world, including its application in metal surface treatment and the production of printed circuit board.

High-purity electronic-grade products require high-purity iron powder or electrolytic iron as the iron source, along with ultra-pure hydrochloric acid to ensure that the heavy metal impurity content is below ppm. In addition, some companies use chlorine oxidation (oxidizing ferrous chloride solution with chlorine to ferric chloride) or by-product recovery (regenerating and recovering from etching waste liquid) as supplementary raw material sources.
    In the cost structure of ferric chloride for etching, raw material costs account for the largest proportion (approximately 50-60%), with fluctuations in hydrochloric acid prices significantly impacting costs, as each ton of ferric chloride requires approximately 0.8-1.0 tons of 30% hydrochloric acid. The cost of iron source materials (iron plates or iron oxide scale) is relatively low, accounting for approximately 15-20% of the total cost. Energy costs (steam concentration, reaction heating) account for approximately 15%, mainly used for solution concentration and crystal water control; environmental treatment costs account for approximately 10-15%, including waste gas (acid mist) absorption, waste liquid treatment, and heavy metal removal processes; this cost is trending upwards as environmental regulations become stricter; packaging and transportation (acid-resistant plastic drums, corrosion protection measures) account for approximately 5-8%. Industrial-grade products, due to their simple processes and low purity requirements, have a gross profit margin of approximately 30-35%, while electronic-grade products, due to their complex purification processes and strict quality control, can achieve a gross profit margin of 45-50%.
