    An Extractive Continuous Emissions Monitoring System is an integrated monitoring system that continuously withdraws a representative flue-gas sample from a stack, duct, or exhaust pipe through a sampling probe. The sample is then transported through a heated line and subjected to filtration, cooling, drying, dilution, or other conditioning processes before being delivered to gas analyzers for measurement. A typical system consists of a sampling probe, blowback unit, heated sample line, gas-conditioning unit, sample pump, gas analyzers, calibration equipment, flue-gas parameter instruments, and a data acquisition and handling system. It can monitor sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxygen, ammonia, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, volatile organic compounds, mercury, and other components. According to the conditioning method, extractive systems are commonly divided into cold-dry, hot-wet, and dilution extractive configurations. Compared with in-situ systems, extractive systems are better suited to centralized multi-component analysis, automatic calibration, and applications requiring flexible analyzer combinations.
    The upstream segment includes light sources, lasers, optical components, infrared and ultraviolet detectors, gas sensors, sample pumps, valves, filters, heated sample lines, gas coolers, moisture-removal units, flow controllers, calibration gases, and industrial computers. Sampling probes, heated lines, and conditioning components directly affect sample representativeness and long-term system stability, while the analyzer determines detection limits, accuracy, response time, and resistance to cross-interference. The midstream consists of analyzer manufacturers, complete-system suppliers, engineering integrators, environmental software providers, and third-party operation and maintenance companies.
