The midstream process includes europium-153 isotope enrichment, chemical purification, speciation conversion, product packaging, and nuclear target processing. Enriched europium-153 is usually produced as ¹⁵³Eu₂O₃ powder and can be further converted into metallic europium, europium chloride, europium nitrate solution, or other compounds. Nuclear reaction targets require pressing, sintering, deposition, rolling, or backing fixation, and the isotope abundance, chemical purity, areal density, thickness uniformity, and trace impurities must be measured. The U.S. National Isotope Development Center can provide europium-153 with an abundance of approximately 98%, offering self-supported metal or oxide targets in custom specifications, reflecting a focus on milligram to gram-level supply based on inquiry. Major downstream applications of europium-153 include nuclear reaction and nuclear data research, radionuclide production, nuclear magnetic resonance, quantum physics, and research on functional materials with controllable isotopic composition. Specifically, europium-153 can be used to produce samarium-153 via a fast neutron-induced ¹⁵³Eu(n,p)¹⁵³Sm reaction, which can be used in nuclear medicine therapy and related research; europium-153 can also be used as a target material to study neutron capture, charged particle reactions, and nuclear structure.
    The development of europium-153 was initially driven by the research and development needs of medical and industrial radionuclides. Enriched europium-153 can be used as a nuclear reaction target to prepare radionuclides such as samarium-153 through fast neutron-induced reactions. Samarium-153 can be used for pain relief in bone metastases, targeted radionuclide therapy, and related drug research; therefore, the development of samarium-153 production technology and supply chain will indirectly drive the demand for high-purity europium-153 targets. However, the more mature production route for samarium-153 still mainly focuses on neutron activation with enriched samarium-152. The europium-153 route is currently primarily responsible for high specific activity preparation, nuclear reaction verification, and research on alternative processes.

Europium-153 has well-defined nuclear spin and neutron reaction characteristics, and can be used to measure neutron capture cross-sections, fast neutron reaction yields, excitation functions, and related decay parameters.
