    Dry friction materials are friction-functional materials designed to operate without oil lubrication or oil-bath cooling. They are mainly used in dry clutch facings, automotive brake pads, motorcycle brake pads, industrial clutches, industrial brakes, agricultural machinery, construction machinery, and other dry transmission or braking systems. Their core function is to transmit torque, disconnect power, decelerate, stop, or hold load through controlled direct contact between friction surfaces. Compared with wet friction materials, dry friction materials do not rely on fluid cooling or lubrication, so they require higher stability of friction coefficient, heat resistance, fade resistance, wear resistance, crack resistance, low noise, low judder, and controlled counterface wear.
    By material system, dry friction materials can be divided into organic friction materials, semi-metallic friction materials, sintered metallic friction materials, ceramic-reinforced friction materials, carbon-based friction materials, and other high-performance composites. Organic materials are typically based on phenolic resin, rubber or elastomer systems, aramid fiber, glass fiber, mineral fiber, fillers, and friction modifiers. They offer smooth engagement, lower noise, moderate cost, and broad application compatibility, making them common in passenger-car dry clutches and standard brake pads. Semi-metallic and low-metallic materials are used where higher heat resistance and braking force are required, while sintered metallic, ceramic-reinforced, and carbon-based materials are more suitable for high-temperature, high-load, high-speed, or frequent braking and engagement conditions.
    In terms of applications, dry friction materials are used in automotive dry clutches, dry dual-clutch systems, automotive disc and drum brake pads, motorcycle brake pads, racing brake systems, industrial dry clutches, industrial brakes, and selected wind-power, mining, port machinery, and construction-equipment braking applications. In automotive clutches, dry friction materials must balance smooth launch engagement, durability during slipping operation, thermal fade control, and NVH performance. In brake systems, key requirements include braking force, thermal stability, wear life, rotor or drum compatibility, noise control, and dust reduction. High-performance and racing applications often use ceramic, sintered, or carbon-based formulations to maintain friction stability at elevated temperatures and under repeated braking, although these materials require tighter balancing of cost, comfort, counterface wear, and low-temperature performance. Some ceramic clutch facings are made from materials such as copper, iron, bronze, silicon dioxide, and graphite, and are sintered or brazed onto a backing structure for demanding high-temperature applications such as racing.
