Its CAS number is 5799-70-2, and its molecular formula is commonly written as CH2Na2O6S2 or CH2(SO3Na)2. The product is generally supplied as a white to off-white powder or crystalline solid and is readily soluble in water. It is mainly used as a chrome-plating additive, hard chrome electroplating intermediate, and metal surface treatment auxiliary. It is neither sodium methanesulfonate nor methanedisulfonic acid itself, but the disodium salt form of methanedisulfonic acid. In electroplating systems, it is mainly valued for its water solubility, stability, and ability to improve coating performance.
The upstream supply chain mainly includes methanedisulfonic acid, sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate as neutralization raw materials, as well as basic chemical materials and equipment required for refining, crystallization, drying, and packaging. Among these, product purity, chloride ions, sulfates, heavy metal impurities, and moisture control directly affect its application stability in chrome-plating baths. Downstream applications are concentrated in chrome-plating additives, surface treatment formulations, fine chemical intermediates, and specialty industrial formulations. In particular, in hard chrome plating and decorative chrome plating, it can be used to improve bath throwing power, covering power, coating hardness, brightness, and process stability.
