      Corrosion under insulation (CUI) poses a significant operational loss, safety hazard and economic cost. Corrosion under insulation (CUI) is invisible to the surface of the insulation. Because of this, it is very difficult for conventional techniques to detect and monitor corrosion under insulation. The presence of moisture in and under insulation is the root cause of corrosion under insulation (CUI). Corrosion under insulation is a severe form of localized external corrosion that occurs in carbon and low alloy steel equipment that has been insulated. This form of corrosion occurs when water is absorbed by or collected in the insulation. As a result he equipment begins to corrode as it is exposed to water and oxygen. Depending on the structure and the location of the insulation, CUI can attack the jacketing, insulation hardware or underlying piping equipment. Additionally, when insulation becomes wet or absorbs moisture, its thermal insulating properties are drastically reduced. Because water conducts heat more efficiently than air, an aggressive corrosion cell is created where the trapped heat accelerates the rate of corrosion.

      There are several common methods used for detecting CUI, including “brute forcing” (i.e., removing insulation, inspecting, mitigating, and re-insulating), conventional and unconventional radiography, pulsed eddy current, guided-wave ultrasonics, and ultrasonic thickness measurements from the internal surface of the equipment. Some operating facilities apply risk and/or criticality analyses to prioritize pressure vessels and piping for CUI inspection, versus “brute forcing”.
