This is achieved through collection, dismantling, sampling, assaying, roasting, pyrometallurgical smelting, hydrometallurgical leaching, chemical separation, refining, and metal account settlement, after which the recovered metals are returned to customers, sold to downstream users, or reused in the production of new catalysts and precious metal compounds. The industry mainly addresses issues such as scarce precious metal resources, the hazardous waste attributes of spent catalysts, high shutdown and catalyst replacement costs for refineries and chemical plants, long metal settlement cycles, opaque assay-based pricing, complex cross-border transportation compliance, and the increasing dependence of new catalyst supply chains on recycled metals.
