Carbon Capture Mineralization is a carbon management process that captures carbon dioxide from industrial exhaust gases, biogenic sources or the atmosphere and then reacts it with calcium- or magnesium-rich minerals, alkaline industrial wastes, concrete residues or other reactive materials to form stable inorganic carbonates. The process may be carried out in above-ground reactors, concrete production systems or underground reactive rock formations. Depending on the technical route, it can permanently store CO₂ while producing synthetic aggregates, carbonated concrete, supplementary cementitious materials, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate and other mineral products. Compared with utilization routes that convert CO₂ into fuels or short-lived chemicals, mineralization provides relatively durable carbon storage because the captured carbon is incorporated into stable solid minerals.
The Carbon Capture Mineralization market is an emerging segment of the carbon capture, utilization and storage industry, driven by decarbonization requirements in cement, concrete, steel, mining, waste management and other hard-to-abate sectors. Commercial development currently focuses on integrating CO₂ capture with concrete production, accelerated carbonation of steel slag and incineration residues, mineralized aggregate manufacturing, mine-tailings treatment and in-situ geological mineralization. The market is moving toward modular systems, direct treatment of low-concentration flue gas, greater use of industrial waste as mineral feedstock, standardized carbon-removal verification and larger commercial facilities. Its development is supported by the potential to combine permanent CO₂ storage with the production of saleable construction materials and mineral chemicals. However, high capital costs, feedstock transportation, variable waste composition, reaction-rate limitations, energy and water requirements, product certification and the need to verify lifecycle carbon benefits remain important constraints on large-scale deployment.
