Bisphenol AP is a specialty bisphenol monomer with three aromatic rings, with the molecular formula C20H18O2 and CAS No. 1571-75-1. It is generally prepared through the condensation of phenol and acetophenone. Compared with conventional bisphenol A, Bisphenol AP contains a phenylethylidene structure, giving it higher rigidity and hydrophobicity, and it can be used as a monomer or intermediate for specialty polycarbonate resins, specialty epoxy resins, functional developers, heat-resistant resins and electronic materials. In 2025, Global Bisphenol AP sales are estimated at approximately 320 Ton, with an average ex-works price of around 35 US$/Kg. The Bisphenol AP value chain starts from phenol, acetophenone, acid catalysts and purification auxiliaries, moves through condensation, isomer control, crystallization/recrystallization and high-purity refining, and then flows into specialty polycarbonates, specialty epoxy resins, developers, electronic resins and heat-resistant functional materials.
Growth in the Bisphenol AP market is mainly driven by demand for higher heat resistance, lower dielectric properties, rigidity, dimensional stability and optical performance in high-performance resins, rather than by large-volume commodity plastic substitution. Electronic and telecommunication components, specialty polycarbonates, specialty epoxy resins, PCB and packaging-related resins, thermal developer systems and advanced functional materials continue to require specialty bisphenol monomers. However, since Bisphenol AP is also a bisphenol analogue, toxicological and regulatory scrutiny may limit its use in food-contact and consumer-sensitive applications.
