    Battery-electric locomotives are railway traction vehicles that use onboard traction batteries as the primary or a material source of propulsion energy and convert stored electrical energy into wheel torque through traction inverters, traction motors, vehicle control systems, regenerative braking systems and battery management systems. This study focuses on locomotive-type vehicles used in freight rail, yard switching, industrial railways, ports, terminals, mining railways, tunnel construction and underground haulage. The covered product forms include heavy-haul battery-electric locomotives, battery-electric switchers and shunters, industrial battery locomotives, mining battery locomotives, tunnel battery locomotives, and battery-enabled dual-power or hybrid platforms where onboard batteries provide substantive traction capability. Key technical features include high-capacity traction battery systems, high-power electric traction drives, regenerative braking, fast charging or battery swapping, thermal management, safety monitoring, low-speed high-tractive-effort control, and reinforced vehicle structures suitable for heavy-duty, underground or industrial environments. Compared with conventional diesel locomotives, battery-electric locomotives mainly create value by reducing local emissions, lowering noise, improving working conditions in confined or underground environments, and improving energy efficiency in short-haul, repetitive, low-speed, high-start-stop and fixed-route applications with predictable charging infrastructure.

    Based on our research, battery-electric locomotives should be viewed as a specialized rail traction platform rather than a direct one-for-one replacement for all conventional electric or diesel locomotives. The early commercial logic is strongest in fixed-route, predictable-duty-cycle and infrastructure-controlled applications, including yard switching, port and terminal railways, steel plant railways, mine railways, underground mining, tunnel construction and maintenance depots. These use cases share several important characteristics: relatively short routes, frequent start-stop operations, high potential for regenerative braking, concentrated diesel emission concerns and practical opportunities to install charging or battery-swapping infrastructure. For this reason, this study applies a narrow OEM-oriented scope. Battery multiple units, battery trams, conventional catenary-powered electric locomotives, traction battery suppliers and charging-equipment vendors are not treated as core manufacturers in this market. China has an additional layer of local mining battery locomotive manufacturers, especially around Hunan, Xiangtan and coal-mining equipment clusters, although some entities require further verification to separate real manufacturers from sales or trading companies.
    Demand growth is driven by railway decarbonization, port and industrial emission control, underground mine ventilation economics, and replacement of aging diesel switchers and mining locomotives. North American freight railroads and mining operators are testing battery-electric locomotives in yard and heavy-haul environments, while European demand is shaped by green rail policy, terminal decarbonization and industrial users seeking lower-emission shunting solutions. In China, growth is supported by both state-backed rail equipment development and continued demand for battery-powered narrow-gauge locomotives in mining and tunnel construction. The market is still project-driven rather than fully standardized.
