According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Aviation Biofuels market size was valued at US$ 8474 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 19509 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 12.2% during review period.
Global aviation biofuel sales reached 4.25 million tons in 2025, with an average price of US$1,935 per ton.
Aviation biofuel refers to aviation turbine fuel produced from renewable biomass such as animal and vegetable oils, agricultural and forestry waste, or algae through processes such as hydrogenation, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, or alcohol-to-oil (ATJ). Its chemical composition, energy density, and freezing point are highly consistent with traditional Jet A-1 jet fuel, and it can be used directly or blended at a ratio of 1%–50% in existing engines without requiring modifications to the aircraft fuel system.
The raw materials for aviation biofuels follow a "three oils and one grass" pattern: oils (palm oil, rapeseed oil, waste cooking oil, and animal fats) remain the mainstream. Europe and America primarily use vegetable oils, while China considers the over ten million tons of "gutter oil" produced annually as a core resource to "not compete with human food production." However, this resource is complex in terms of impurities and fluctuates significantly from batch to batch, requiring additional degumming and deacidification processes. Agricultural and forestry waste (straw, sawdust) and microalgae are considered second/third-generation raw materials. They are widely available and do not occupy arable land, but the lignocellulose requires expensive pretreatment. Although microalgae have an oil content as high as 70% of cell dry weight, large-scale cultivation and harvesting are still in the demonstration stage.
In terms of cost structure, raw material costs account for the largest share, reaching 65%–85%. Palm oil and rapeseed oil prices fluctuate with grain and oil prices, while gutter oil, despite its lower price, requires an additional purification process, resulting in an overall factory price only 10%–15% lower than vegetable oils. The remaining 15%–35% consists of hydrogen, catalysts, electricity, and depreciation: the oil-based hydrogenation route requires approximately 3.5–400 Nm³ of hydrogen per ton of SAF, with the price of green hydrogen directly determining the upper limit of the cost; the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis route requires multiple gasification and upgrading steps, resulting in even higher capital depreciation. Overall, the market price of SAF remains 2–4 times that of petrochemical jet fuel, and its commercial viability depends on policies such as mandatory blending in the EU and tax credits in the US.
