During magnetron sputtering, AZO targets deposit n-type transparent conductive films combining visible-light transmission with electrical conductivity on glass, silicon, polymer and photovoltaic substrates. Major applications include thin-film solar cells, architectural and automotive Low-E glass, flat-panel displays, touch panels, LEDs, sensors and other optoelectronic devices. Key product parameters include purity, aluminum-oxide distribution, relative density, electrical resistivity, grain size, flexural strength, sputtering stability and bonding integrity. Market upgrading will focus on high-density, low-resistivity and large-format rotatable targets. Compared with planar targets, rotatable targets provide higher material utilization, more uniform erosion profiles and longer continuous operating periods, making them well suited to architectural glass, automotive glass and large-area photovoltaic coating lines. Increasing requirements for relative density above 98%, fine grain structure, low particle generation, low outgassing and stable long-duration discharge are driving investment in high-purity powder preparation, cold isostatic pressing, hot pressing or hot isostatic pressing, precision machining and large-area target bonding.
AZO continues to compete with ITO, which retains advantages in conductivity, process maturity and environmental stability. AZO films may experience increased resistance or performance degradation under high humidity, elevated temperature, acidic or alkaline environments and certain plasma conditions. Large-area control of thickness and sheet resistance also remains technically demanding. AZO is therefore more likely to expand as a differentiated material in thin-film photovoltaics, glass coatings and composite TCO structures than to replace ITO completely in the near term.
