The supply chain begins upstream with phenol and formaldehyde production (from petrochemical aromatics and methanol), followed by phenolic resin synthesis with tailored molecular weight, crosslink density, and char yield; midstream processing includes resin modification (fillers, carbon additives, silica, boron compounds), prepreg impregnation, and molding compound formulation; downstream, the resin is integrated into carbon-phenolic, glass-phenolic, or silica-phenolic composites via lay-up, filament winding, or compression molding, before final curing, machining, and qualification by aerospace, defense, and high-temperature industrial end users.
