Downstream, the iodide is used as an intermediate to introduce alternative functional “heads” (e.g., alcohols and other derivatives), enabling the manufacture of fluorotelomer-based surfactants and side-chain fluorinated polymers used in surface-protection / water- and oil-repellency applications (textiles, paper, coatings, etc.); as a PFAS-related precursor, compliance and stewardship considerations are often part of commercialization.
